Description
Cased Caddis
The Cased Caddis Fly is a versatile and effective fly pattern that imitates the larval stage of a caddisfly encased in its protective shelter. Caddisfly larvae build these cases from sand, small pebbles, or plant materials, attaching them to the streambed for protection. They are a favorite food source for trout due to their abundance and accessibility, especially during high water or after disturbance of the streambed.
Key Features
Appearance:
- A cased caddis fly imitation mimics the tubular casing of the larva, along with the protruding insect body.
- The fly is typically fished as a nymph.
Materials:
- Hook: Nymph hook, sizes 10–18.
- Thread: Olive, tan, or black.
- Body:
- For the case: Materials like hare’s ear dubbing, peacock herl, or small bits of synthetic or natural fibers to mimic sand or plant debris.
- For the larva: Green, olive, or cream dubbing to imitate the caddis larva’s body.
- Weight (Optional): Lead wire or tungsten bead for added sinking capability.
- Legs/Head: Dark dubbing or small hackle fibers to mimic the head and legs of the larva.
Fishing Techniques for the Cased Caddis Fly
When to Use:
- All year round, especially when caddisflies are prevalent in the water system.
- Particularly effective after rain or in faster currents when the natural larvae may be dislodged.
Presentation:
- Dead Drift: Allow the fly to drift naturally along the streambed.
- Bounce or Swing: Gently lift and drop the rod tip to mimic the natural movement of the caddis.
- Best Locations: Near riffles, runs, and the bottom of deep pools where caddisfly larvae often reside.
Variations to the Cased Caddis Fly
- Peeking Caddis: Features a bright green or chartreuse larva “peeking” out of the case, adding a visual trigger.
- Weighted Caddis: Includes additional weight for faster-sinking in deeper water.
- Simplified Cased Caddis: Uses materials like chenille or rough dubbing for a quick-and-easy tie.
Usually available in the following hook sizes: 10 | 12 | 14 | 16 | 18
